Excerpt from the Diary of Major Adam Solski, 9 April 1940
9.04 [9 April]. A few minutes before five in the morning—wake-up call in the prison railway cars and preparations to leave. We are to go somewhere by car. And what then?
9.04. Five a.m. The day began in a special way at dawn. Departure in a prison car in cells (awful!). We were driven to some place in a wood; something like a summer resort. Here, a detailed search took place. They took my watch, showing 6:30. They asked about my wedding ring…. They took rubles, main belt, penknife.
Solski diary, 29 September 1939-9 April 1940, in Jan A. Stepek, ed., Pamiêtniki Znalezione w Katyniu [Diaries Found at Katyn], foreword by Janusz K. Zawodny (2nd expanded edition, Paris and Warsaw, 1990), pp. 94-105, endnotes p. 105; see also KDZ2, p. 22 (trans. A. M. Cienciala). The ellipses denote a part of the entry that could not be restored by Polish experts who worked on the diaries in Kraków (see the story of the diaries in the introduction to Part III). An extract of Solski's diary was produced in English as Exhibit 28A in Hearings, part 4, pp. 733-734. For an English translation of an extract covering Solski's travel from Kozelsk through Smolensk, see Crime of Katyn, pp. 189-190.
