The appearance of Sakharov's O strane i mire [My country and the world]

The Committee for State Security reported (in no. 1597-A of June 22, 1975) that Academician Sakharov was writing a libelous attack titled “My Country and the World.” According to information received, in late June or early July Sakharov sent this libel for publication abroad, using his contacts among foreigners.

In July this essay was published in the USA as a separate Russian-language book.

At the present time, arrangements are under way in Italy and the United States to publish it in several Western European languages. Separate chapters and excerpts have appeared in the American magazine Time

and in the Milan Giornale Nuovo, and they have been extensively discussed on short-wave broadcasts of “Voice of America,” “Die Deutsche Welle,” “Radio d'Italia,” and others.

To stir up publicity for this libelous tract, the bourgeois press and radio present it as Sakharov's “political testament,” summarizing his activity as “the leader of dissenters and a fighter for civil rights in the Soviet Union.”

Sakharov's libelous attack consists of seven sections: Introduction; Soviet Society; The Freedom to Choose One's Country of Residence; Disarmament; Indochina and the Middle East; The Liberal Intelligentsia of the West: Its Illusions and Responsibilities; Conclusion.

This libelous work contains a malicious calumny directed against the Soviet Union and socialism, claiming, in particular, that there is “no democracy,” that the Soviet people live in “poverty,” that national minorities are “oppressed,” that there is “persecution” for political and religious reasons. It demands freedom of information and the free movement of people. Touching upon problems of international relations, Sakharov raises questions about disarmament, points out mistakes by Western countries in their political and economic relations with the USSR, warns the West against the danger that the Soviet Union poses for the capitalist world, and urges the West to unite to exert pressure on the USSR and socialist countries.

and direct complicity with the forces of international reaction. Even now the foreign press and radio are powerless to conceal this.

For example, the radio station “Die Deutsche Welle,” in its broadcast of August 25, reported that the work “is an indictment of Soviet society and represents a summary of Sakharov's political ideas in his role as leader of the domestic Soviet opposition….”
