I have had an extended conversation with Bulgakov. He makes the impression of a persecuted and doomed man. I'm not even certain his nerves are in order. His situation is truly desperate. Judging from my general impression, he wants to work with us, but they aren't letting him or helping him in this. Under these conditions, satisfaction of his request is fair.
