3 June 1937
The government's published resolution on the awarding of the Order of Lenin to the USSR State Academic Theater as well as orders and titles to many workers has evoked general enthusiasm.
The following statements have been recorded:
Ozerov , People's Artist of the RSFSR:
“Lately, they have not been giving me work. I'm thrilled at this attitude of the government toward me. They have given my spirits a terrific boost. I now have fresh new strength for further fruitful work.”
Golovanov , Honored Figure of the Arts:
“I'm amazed at receiving the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. I'm afraid it was a mistake, that they confused me with Golovin, who is not on the list of recipients. If no mistake was made, then I look on this award as the very highest of the whole collective, for I had been feeling out of favor.”

Melik-Pashaev , a conductor at GABT [the State Academic Bolshoi Theater], Honored Figure of the Arts:
“There are no bounds to my happiness. I cannot convey my delight. I am also happy because Nebolsin (a conductor at GABT) received a lesser one than mine.”

Lepeshinskaia , ballet soloist of the Bolshoi Theater:
“I'm very happy. I'm only twenty-one and I've already received such a high award. This could only happen in the USSR.”
Gabovich , ballet soloist of the Bolshoi Theater, Honored Artist of the Republic:
“I'm having the happiest day. Today I received an order, the title of Honored Artist, and today I was promoted from candidate to member of the VKP(b).”
Zlatogorova, Honored Artist:
“Rumors have been flying for months about the upcoming awards. I didn't believe this. Today's resolution is almost a complete surprise for me. I'm endlessly happy.”
Politkovsky , Honored Figure of the Arts:
“I never expected such a high award. I'm very pleased. I hope that for

the twentieth anniversary of the October Revolution I'll receive the title of People's Artist. Then I'll be completely content.”
Maksakova , Honored Artist:
“I'm deeply touched at receiving the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, but at the same time I'm amazed at why they didn't award me the title of People's Artist, as they did Khanaev, who has only been on stage for ten years, while I've been on it seventeen.”

Golovin , Honored Artist of the Republic:
“They didn't give me anything. I'm absolutely dead. Evidently they don't trust me politically. I'm afraid that repressive measures are going to be taken against me for statements that have been interpreted as praise of Trotsky. Despite the insult, I'm going to try to work wonderfully and show what I'm capable of. I'm going to get myself an order.”
In the left margin of the special report, opposite the remarks of M. P. Maksakova and D. D. Golovin, there is a note in pencil written by V. M. Molotov: “To Com. Mogilny. Report this by telephone to Com. Kerzhentsev and get his suggest[tions] today. M[olotov]. Contact Kerzhentsev regarding Gol[ovin] and Mes[serer]. Com. Kerzhentsev must submit the corresponding draft. Mol[otov].” On 3 June 1937, the Politburo approved a resolution conferring awards on D. D. Golovin, G. V. Zhukovsky, and S. M. Messerer.
Sulamith Messerer , ballet soloist of the Bolshoi Theater:
“I've spent eleven years working in the theater. The whole time I've been playing leading roles. When the rumors went around about the upcoming awards, I didn't have the slightest doubt that I'd be awarded somehow. What a bitter disappointment. Lepeshinskaia, who has only been working a few years, got an order, but I didn't. I can't show my face at the theater. I'm so ashamed.”
