In spring 1918, the Bolsheviks published a decree in Ekaterinodar in Izvestia (the Soviet's newspaper) and glued it to posts, according to which unmarried girls and women aged sixteen-twenty-five were subject to "socialization," and letting it be known that those wishing to make use of this decree should go to the appropriate revolutionary institutions. The initiator of this "socialization" was the Commissar of Internal Affairs, the Jew Bronshtein. He was the one who gave out "warrants" for this "socialization." [ . . . ] Warrants were issued both in the name of Red Army soldiers and in the name of Soviet leaders, for example, under the name of Karaseev, the commandant of the palace where Bronshtein was living: [ . . . ] On the basis of such warrants, Red Army soldiers seized more than sixty girls—for the most part young and pretty, bourgeois and students of local schools. Some were seized when the Red Army was cordoning off the city park, indeed four of them were raped right there in one of the huts. The others were taken away, about twenty-five, were taken to Bronshtein in the Ataman's palace, the rest to the "Old Commercial" Hotel to Kobsyrev and to the Bristol Hotel to the sailors, where they were raped. A few of those arrested were later freed, for example, the girl who was raped by the chief of the Bolshevik criminal-investigative police Prokofiev, others were taken away by departing units of the Red Army, and their fate remained unknown. Lastly, some, after various forms of cruel tortures, were killed and thrown into the Kuban and Karasun rivers. Such, for example, was a student of the fifth grade in one of the Yekaterinodar gymnazia, who was raped for twelve days and nights by an entire group of Red Army soldiers, after which the Bolsheviks tied her to a tree and set her on fire, before finally shooting her.
